1. Can you describe your journey into lifestyle photography? What inspired you to pursue this genre of photography?

Collaborating with lifestyle brands in Charleston, SC has allowed me to capture the surrounding natural beauty, making it a perfect fit for me. I was initially inspired by brands like Iron and Resin, which elevated lifestyle content by creating standalone short films. These films focused more on the lifestyle itself than the brand, granting them added credibility.

2. What do you believe distinguishes lifestyle photography from other forms of photography, such as portrait or documentary photography?

The distinguishing factor is the story that lifestyle photographs convey. Lifestyle photography centers on capturing a culture, a feeling, and a community, and it should maintain consistency for each brand.

3. How do you approach planning and preparation for a lifestyle photography shoot, especially when working with clients or models?

During the planning phase, I often ask my clients, "What feelings do you want people to experience when they see these images?" This open-ended question allows the client to share their overall vision, and I jot down ideas that naturally come to mind.

4. Can you share a memorable or challenging experience from one of your lifestyle photography sessions and how you handled it?

Some of the most challenging experiences occur when the weather or external factors don't cooperate. However, these situations can also be some of the most memorable because they offer the opportunity to capture something unique. One of my favorites was a park session with a yogi where steady rain unexpectedly arrived after 15 minutes. We embraced it and ended up capturing incredible photos in the rainfall.

5. What type of equipment and gear do you prefer to use for lifestyle photography, and why do you find it effective for this genre?

I prefer using prime portrait lenses and occasionally a polarizing filter, depending on the available light.

6. Lighting plays a crucial role in lifestyle photography. How do you manage and manipulate light to create the desired mood or atmosphere in your shots?

I always strive to be prepared for various lighting conditions during a shoot, often bringing more gear than I'll likely use to ensure we capture high-quality photographs. Lighting is pivotal in photography, and I consider it in every session. My preferred method for manipulation is using a sun diffuser on bright, sunny days, which mimics studio lighting outdoors.

7. Many lifestyle photographers aim to capture candid moments. How do you establish trust and rapport with your subjects to ensure authenticity in your photos?

I maintain an ongoing conversation with my subjects and seek common interests. Building this connection quickly establishes trust and helps capture authentic moments.

8. Post-processing is an integral part of photography. Could you describe your approach to photo editing and the software tools you use?

In post-processing, I typically begin with basic adjustments in Adobe Lightroom. Afterward, I go through each photo, adjusting crop, color, and retouching distractions in Photoshop.

9. What advice would you offer to aspiring lifestyle photographers looking to improve their storytelling and composition skills within this genre?

Carry your camera everywhere! I emphasize this because photography often hinges on being in the right place at the right time. Constant practice will improve your understanding of all aspects of photography.

10. In today's digital age, how do you stay creatively inspired and relevant in the constantly evolving world of photography, particularly within the realm of lifestyle photography?

I spend a lot of time wandering and capturing authentic moments. Often, creativity emerges during unscripted personal projects when I follow spontaneous ideas.
